Introduction

Bucket hats have become a major trend with their practicality, versatility and nostalgic appeal, perfect for holidays, concerts and everyday wear. Embroidery can transform a simple bucket hat into a personalised fashion statement by adding colour, designs and details so that you can stand out from the crowd at your next gig. In this guide, we will take you step-by-step on how to embroider your bucket hats with unique slogans and pictures to upsell to your customers.

Step 1: Prepare your Bucket Hats for Embroidery

Firstly, you are going to want to map out with a chalk pencil where you would like your design to go. Next, you want to get your frame for your bucket hat. You can use a bucket hat frame if you have one, however a cap frame would work just as well. To ensure a smooth finish on your bucket hat, you will need to cut out two pieces of backing paper to line the inside of your hat. Again, if you don't have a specific hat or cap backing paper, other backing paper can be used by cutting it into a long oblong shape. Now you have everything you need to get started!

Step 2: Align the Hat with your Design

To ensure your hat is embroidered perfectly, it is important to align your bucket hat to ensure the design remains in the position you originally sketched out. Firstly, you want to take your two pieces of backing paper and place it under the lip at the front of your cap frame. Next, you are going to pull the sweatband out of your blank bucket hat and place this on top of the backing paper under the lip, pulling it tight and then placing the lip back down. Flip the rim of your hat over.

Step 3: Secure the Hat to Avoid Puckering

It is highly important you keep the hat secured and flush to prevent any movement and puckering when the machine starts the embroidery. To ensure a flat and smooth surface, you are going to fold both sides of your bucket hat one at a time. You can then pull over the teeth of the cap frame following the lines of the seam and clip it down. Ensure there are no bumps or creases when doing this. Adjust the hat if you need to whilst clipped to ensure your embroidery surface is completely flat. Once you are happy with it, you can remove the bucket hat off the carriage. If you find creases once taking it off the carriage you can use additional clips to pull back the fabric tightly.

Step 4: Embroider your design

Now your bucket hat has the perfect smooth surface, this can now be placed in your embroidery machine. Use the guide you made earlier from the chalk pencil and align this up with the centre of the laser light on your machine. Set your machine to trace the hat just to do a final check of alignment and once you're happy, you are good to go! Once embroidered, take away the frame and backing paper and you will be left with a perfect design.
