What is Discharge Printing?

Coming into 2026, we can expect to see an increase in discharge printing with the market expected to grow by 4.3% from 2021 to 2026. This growth is driven by increase in demand for sustainable and eco-friendly textiles and the importance of sustainability amongst consumers. Discharge printing is a method of textile printing that involves the removal of the first dyed solid colour on the garment using a chemical agent to create a design. A new colour can then be used to replace the colour that was removed. This method of printing is mostly used on 100% cotton and performs equally well on light and dark garments. Vibrant colours on dark garments: Unlike some other printing methods, one of the biggest advantages of discharge printing is the ability to produce bright colours on garments. Discharge ink replaces the original garment dye ensuring bright and vibrant colours show in their place using thin layers of ink.  

Maintains a Soft Hand feel: Discharge printing allows the garment to maintain its soft hand feel as the ink becomes part of the garment. Screen printing uses plastisol ink for application of designs which can sit on top garment. Unlike screen printing, discharge printing creates a much more breathable print allowing the garment to maintain its softness. 

Eco-friendly: As this method of printing is water based and free from PVC and phthalates, discharge printing is an eco-friendly alternative to standard plastisol ink which is used in screen printing. Discharge printing requires less energy to set the ink which reduces the impact on the environment.
